Overlooking Orlando

 Buddy's Holiday Tree

Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer cannot possibly be as dense as he seems, can he?
Just moments ago, he stood in front of City Hall and thanked Channel 6 for helping light up his tree. He also thanked some comedy team named "Doc 'n'Johnny" before throwing the switch in what looked like a home circuit box.
There were no o-o-o's or ah-h-h's...and no coverage from any of the other two news stations. (Fox 35 doesn't count...not because they are a Fox affiliate, but because they were showing "King of the Hill".)
If you were watching channels 2 or 9, you missed the whole thing.
Not that there was much to miss...the channel 6 crew went from the multi handed switch throw to an already lit tree.
I suspect that even the Public Relations Department at the University of Florida (yes, you can get a degree in PR from UF) would know that you don't alienate 75% of your town's media when staging a media event.
If he's lucky, the Sentinel will put a big color photo on page one above the fold, rather than a cropped black and white on page three of the Life and Times section.
Actually, considering he's already been removed from office and reinstated in the past year, been the subject of protests from his own police department and was nearly defeated by a novice candidate with a thick Irish accent, Mayor Buddy is probably just lucky enough.
Still pretty dense, though.

 For sale...but not cheap.

So I'm going thru a few blogs, and I come across this little nugget at the TPM Cafe (affiliated with Josh Marshall's Talking Points Memo). It seems they are putting together the Abramoff 6; that is, 6 US Congressmen, all Republicans, who have shared some "special times" with Washington's top influence peddler. As I'm going down the list, I notice MY Congressman rounding out the sextet...

TOM FEENEY (FLA-24)

* Feeney took a golf trip arranged by Jack Abramoff in August of 2003 to Scotland. In addition, he traveled to South Korea, Taiwan and Hong Kong on trips paid for by The National Center for Public Policy Research, and whose board Abramoff sat on. The Scotland trip was paid for personally by Jack Abramoff, through money from Indian tribes. The Asia trip was paid for by the Korea-U.S Exchange Council. (Orlando Sentinel, 3/10/05)

I go to Feeney's web site, and there's no mention of this, although there is a blurb about John McCain visiting back in May and something about new computers for a school in Apopka. Who knew Feeney even liked to golf?
So, if I get this right, my Congressman gets a trip to Scotland to play golf because his friend Jack gets some Indian tribe to kick in the greens fees.
Betcha it wasn't the Seminoles.

I have a blog? HOW DID THAT HAPPEN???

So I get home from a hard day of civil servicing, and find the cable is off...being unable to watch "Bob 'n' Martie" on Channel 9 was bad enough, but the geniuses at Brighthouse also control my hi-speed internet service. I grabbed their fridge magnet (the one that tells me that cable is much more efficient than satellite when it's raining) and call the magic number.
I nearly dropped the phone when I got a real person after pushing just a couple of buttons. The strange thing was that "Eric" seemed more pissed off than I was..."
"YES! We know about the outage and have a crew on the scene thank you for calling Brighthouse Networks", he said.
I apologized for bothering him and hung up.
As bad as it was, it was better than calling Progress Energy...but's that's another story we can save for when the blogging gets rough.
Which reminds me...
The way this Blogstream thing works, it's like a gated community of the blogosphere; You can't comment on a posting unless you sign up...
1-you sign up to make a comment on a blog
2-congratulations! You now have a blog of your own!
I didn't WANT a blog of my own...too much pressure!
And nothing happens in Metro-Orlando...
...well, not much.
